Hogan Fights For Change In Maryland

In addition to his considerable success in business, Larry Hogan has also spent an entire lifetime dedicated to community activism, public service, politics, and fighting for change in Maryland. When he was just a kid in the 60’s he got started working hard in the campaigns of his father, Larry Hogan Sr., a little known former FBI agent, lawyer, and University of Maryland Professor who took on the powerful Democratic machine bosses in Prince George’s County, and became the first Republican to be elected in the overwhelmingly Democratic (3 to 1) 5th Congressional District of Maryland in generations. Larry Hogan, Jr., at the age of 12 stood next to his Dad on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, raised his right hand and repeated the Congressional oath of office. His Dad joked that this way the 5th District would get two votes in Congress.

Larry Hogan Sr. gave up his safe seat in Congress, after serving three terms, to run for Governor of Maryland in 1974. Although he was defeated, he came back as the last Republican ever elected county-wide in Prince George’s County, becoming County Executive in 1978. In addition to taking on larger and more important roles in each of his Dad’s campaigns, Larry was making quite a mark for himself in politics. As President of the Young Republicans he built it into one of the largest and most effective political organizations in Maryland. He worked as a State Legislative Aide while earning his Degree in Government and Political Science. He became a Legislative Assistant on Capitol Hill, and held several important positions in local government. He was active in passing the TRIM property tax limitation in Prince George’s County in 1978. He served as an Alternate Delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1976 and was elected to the Republican State Central Committee in 1978.

Larry Hogan, Sr. gave up his County Executive seat to run for the United States Senate in 1982, and became Republican National Committeeman. The Reagan Revolution of the ‘80s became a major part of the younger Larry Hogan’s political involvement. Larry served as Chairman of Youth for Reagan, and was a part of the winning campaign that helped Reagan win, even in Maryland. Larry was elected as a Delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1980, 1984, and 1988. In each election, he was the highest vote getter in the 5th Congressional District of Maryland. In 1981, at the age of only 24, Larry ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for Congress in a special election which was won by former Maryland Senate President, Steny Hoyer. Larry co-chaired a successful bi-partisan effort to reform the Prince George’s County Government and worked tirelessly in dozens of campaigns throughout Maryland. He also served on the Reagan Bush Inaugural Committee and as 5th District Chairman of Citizens for America.
